Galsworthy, John (1867-1933)

John Galsworthy the English novelist and playwright was born in Kingston, Surrey. He wrote "From the Four Winds", "The Man of Property" and "The Forsyte Saga". In 1932 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.


Gaskell, Elizabeth Cleghorn (1810-1865)

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell the English novelist was born in Chelsea, London. She wrote "Mary Barton", "Cranford" and "North and South".


Gershwin, George (1898-1937)

George Gershwin was an American jazz pianist and composer. He wrote "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Porgy and Bess".


Gibbon, Lewis Grassic (1901-1935)

Lewis Grassic Gibbon (real name James Leslie Mitchell) the Scottish novelist was born in Arbuthnott, Aberdeenshire. He wrote "Sunset Song", "Cloud Howe" and "Grey Granite".


Gide, André (1860-1951)

André Paul Guillaume Gide the French novelist was born in Paris. He wrote "L'immoraliste" (The Immoralist), "The Vatican Cellars" and "Les faux-monnayeurs" (The Counterfeiters). In 1947 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.


Gluck, Christoph Willibald von (1714-1787)

Christoph Willibald von Gluck was a German opera composer. He composed a number of operas, including 'Orefeo' and 'Eurydice'.


Godden, Margaret Rumer (1907-1998)

Margaret Rumer Godden the English author was born in Sussex. She wrote "Black Narcissus", "Breakfast with the Nikolides" and "Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy".


Godwin, William (1756- 1836)

William Godwin the English novelist and philosopher was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. He questioned the validity of established goverment and institutions, notably marriage. Godwin is most famous for two books: "An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice" and "Things as They Are or The Adventures of Caleb Williams".


Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von (1749-1832)

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe the German poet, dramatist, novelist, philosopher, scientist and statesman was born in Frankfurt-am-Main. He is regarded as the founder of modern German literature. He wrote the plays "Götz von Berlichingen", "Egmont", "Torquato Tasso", "Faust", and the novels "The Sorrows of Young Werther" and "Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship".


Gogol, Nikolai Vasilievich (1809-1852)

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol the Russian short-story writer, dramatist and novelist was born in Sorochyntsi, Poltava. He wrote the play "The Government Inspector" and the novel "Dead Souls".
