Farquhar, George (1678-1707)

George Farquhar was an Irish dramatist. He wrote lightly satirical plays such as "The Recruiting Officer" and "The Beaux' Stratagem".


Faulkner, William Harrison (1897-1962)

William Harrison Faulkner the American novelist was born near Oxford, Mississippi. He wrote many novels including, "The Sound and the Fury", "As I Lay Dying", "Light in August" and "Absalom, Absalom!". In 1949 he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature.


Fermat, Pierre de (1601-1665)

Pierre de Fermat was a French mathematician. He was the founder of number theory and, with Blaise Pascal he founded the theory of probability.


Feydeau, Georges (1862-1921)

Georges Feydeau was a French dramatist. He became well known for the many farces that he wrote such as 'Hotel Paradiso'.


Feynman, Richard Phillips (1918-1988)

Richard Phillips Feynman was an American physicist. He shared the 1965 Nobel prize in physics for his work in quantum electrodynamics.


Fielding, Henry (1707-1754)

Henry Fielding the English novelist was born near Glastonbury, Somerset. He wrote "Tom Jones", "Joseph Andrews" and "Jonathan Wild".


Fields, W. C. (1880-1946)

W. C. Fields (real name William Claude Dukenfield) was an American movie actor. He usually played cynical, drunken, anti-sentimental characters. Two of his most popular movies were 'The Bank Dick' and 'Never Give a Sucker an Even Break'.


Fitzgerald, Ella (1918-1996)

Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer. She was one of the most popular singers of her day and was called the 'First Lady of Song'. One of her most successful songs was 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket'. During her career Ella recorded over 200 albums.


Fitzgerald, F. Scott (1896-1940)

F. Scott Fitzgerald (Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald) the American novelist and short-story writer was born in St Paul, Minnesota. He wrote the novels "The Great Gatsby", "Tender is the Night" and "The Last Tycoon".


Fitzgerald, Penelope (1916-2000)

Penelope Fitzgerald the English novelist was born in Lincoln. She wrote "The Golden Child", "The Bookshop" and "Offshore" which won the Booker Prize in 1979.
